Photo Tip Thursday: Shooting Into the Sun

As we all know, the Fall is fast approaching and the sun is starting to set earlier and earlier each day that goes by. Sad day. What’s even more sad is how much more time it takes out of your day for outfit photos, especially if you have a busy schedule during the week. Grace and I are always rushing during this time of year to squeeze in a couple of outfits right before the sun goes down. Because of this, we often times find ourselves shooting when the sun is very low, which has actually been the result of some very pretty photos for us.

To get these photos, we shot into the sun. It’s just simply putting the sun behind your subject and then taking the photos. There’s a few things that you need to know before you go out and take these yourself however.

1. Use center-weighted/partial metering mode on your camera. This is a fancy way that your camera determines the proper exposure for your subject. In automatic mode your camera is stupid. It tries to measure the light on every part of the photo and average them out. This is no bueno because of one reason. When shooting into the sun, there is a ton of light entering the camera from behind your subject, but no direct light coming from your subject because they are technically shaded. Your subject will come out underexposed when using the automatic metering. You need to expose for your subject only, this is where the center-weighted/partial metering mode comes in. It measures the proper exposure needed by averaging out the light from the center 10-15% of your viewfinder, right where your subject will be.

2. Use manual mode. You need to have fine control over shutter speed and ISO. It’s essential.

3. Don’t listen to your light meter. That’s right, in this scenario, the little trickster lies. When your light meter says that your subject will be properly exposed, it won’t! You need to deliberately move the arrow in the light meter one or two stops to the right {by decreasing shutter speed or raising the ISO}  of the center mark to ensure that your subject is properly lit. By doing this, the background will be slightly overexposed, but that’s just part of what makes these types of photos look so good.

  3. I'm a little confused on what the centered setting you mentioned is – sorry, new to manual! Haha. if it helps, I have a rebel t3i. Are you meaning that the subject be in the middle of the shot and you place focus there? Thank so much, love these photo tips!

  4. Andrew Adams says:

No worries! The center-weighted metering has nothing to do with focus, rather it tells the camera how much light is entering through the lens. Automatic metering {also known as evaluative metering} measures the amount of light from all the visible areas in the viewfinder {background and subject} and averages them to tell you what it thinks is the proper exposure. This doesn't work very well for backlit subjects because the background is much brighter than your subject, so when the camera calculates the exposure that it thinks is "correct," your subject and their outfit appears much darker than it should. Center-weighted metering measures the amount of light in a circular area smack dab in the middle of your viewfinder {the part that's usually right over your subject, it's usually 10-15% of the area that the whole viewfinder covers}. This means it calculates the proper exposure off of your subject/outfit, not the background, so the exposure meter will be much more accurate and your subject will be properly exposed. I'll make a post next week with some pictures and examples to try and explain it a little more clearly. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tips, guys! The sun is kind of my worst enemy sometimes, so this is super helpful. I'm emailing this to my photographer boyfriend to read up on 🙂

There’s not a day that goes by when I don’t feel so blessed to be Jordan’s wife. He is my everything. These photos and video are the sweetest reminder of our love for one another. So, grab a cup of coffee, pull up a seat, and try not to bawl your eyes out (because I know we did). Every time we look through our photos and watch our video, we cry the happiest tears.

The Proposal

It’s crazy what can happen in a year. I met the love of my life and the rest is history. I was having a hard time ending this post, because frankly, I think I could talk about that evening forever. Then I realized that this post doesn’t have an ending, but instead, a beginning. Thank you so much for all of the love, excitement, and gratitude.
