Photo Tip Thursday: Protecting Your Lens

Hi there, I’m back on regular schedule and here to deliver you another photo tip. This week’s photo tip doesn’t have anything to do with photography techniques, rather it has to do with maintaining your gear, specifically your lenses for your D-SLR cameras.

Lenses for D-SLRs can be quite expensive, so it makes sense to do everything that you can to protect them so that they stay in good working order. One of the most important parts of the lens to protect is the glass on the front of the lens, also known as the “front element”. If this glass happens to get messed up, say by accidentally smacking it into something, getting grit on it and scratching it, or by it being exposed to the elements, your image quality can suffer catastrophically. Even worse, the lens might stop working all together and you’ll have just ruined a very expensive piece of equipment.

To avoid this, I suggest getting a clear UV filter for each of your lenses. A UV filter is a thin, circular piece of glass surrounded by a circular-metal frame that screws into the threading on the front of your lens. They’re relatively inexpensive, generally ranging from $15-30 depending on the size and manufacturer. To find the correct sized filter that your lens needs, try looking on your lens or on the inside of the lens cap that comes with your lens. The filter size should be listed in millimeters next to the greek letter Phi as seen below.

While it might seem like an unnecessary item to have, you’ll be thanking yourself for buying one when you only have to replace a $15 filter instead of the entire lens should you ever have any accidents with your camera.

great tip, can't wait for the lenses for fashion bloggers, or regular bloggers like me 🙂 Also I'm looking to upgrade my DSLR, I just have an entry Rebel from 2009, so it's old (before they had video capability), any tips of which to buy next? My cousin is trying to convince me to buy the Sony A7 with the adapter so I can keep using my canon lenses. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

I always get a little concerned with my camera and the vulnerabilityof it if I take it to the beach, rock scrambling and on the boat. I've been lucky so far but my luck may run out. Thank you for the helpful tips and suggestions. I'm going to look in to get a lens adapter. Can't hurt.

Hi Sarah! To start off, it depends on your experience with the current camera. If you like the Canon Rebel that you have, you might consider upgrading to a Canon 70D. It's in the same price range as the Sony A7, has a nice adjustable LCD screen, built in WiFi so you can actually control your camera remotely with an app on your phone and download pictures directly to the phone, and it can take 1080P HD video as well. As for the Sony A7, it has the same features but the nice part is that it's smaller since it's a mirror-less camera. The only drawback is having to purchase the extra adapter which can be fairly expensive and also slows down the autofocus on some of the lenses. My advice is that if you really liked the Rebel that you had, you upgrade to something like the 70D, that way you can still use your current lenses without having to spend money on an extra adapter. If however you weren't so fond of it and would like something more compact, go with the A7. It's an excellent camera as well and it's used more and more by a lot of well known photographers.

  4. I love your photo trips! Thanks for sharing these! Have a great weekend!

  5. I agree that protection is key! I don´t think that any UV lense will do, though. A lot of the cheaper ones will impact the quality of your photos. I invested in the pricier Hoya filters and never looked back!

  6. Oh I never thought of using an UV lens, I'll look into it though! 🙂 I can't wait for photog tips next week! I just purhcased the EOS 60D so I can't wait for any tips having to do with that camera! 🙂 ♥

There’s not a day that goes by when I don’t feel so blessed to be Jordan’s wife. He is my everything. These photos and video are the sweetest reminder of our love for one another. So, grab a cup of coffee, pull up a seat, and try not to bawl your eyes out (because I know we did). Every time we look through our photos and watch our video, we cry the happiest tears.

The Proposal

It’s crazy what can happen in a year. I met the love of my life and the rest is history. I was having a hard time ending this post, because frankly, I think I could talk about that evening forever. Then I realized that this post doesn’t have an ending, but instead, a beginning. Thank you so much for all of the love, excitement, and gratitude.
