Photo Tip Thursday: How to Shoot Accessories

Earrings, bracelets, watches and other assorted arm candy. They’re all an essential part of any fashion blogger’s outfit, and therefore they need to be photographed in a manner that showcases them properly. To begin, you want to isolate the subject that you’re photographing from its surroundings so that the viewers attention is drawn to it. Because of this, I recommend shooting your accessories using really large apertures {f/1.4-2.8} so that the accessory is in focus but everything else around it is blurred.

Large apertures isolate the accessories from the background. This shot was taken at an aperture of f/1.4.

The next thing you need to think about is how many accessories are you trying to capture at once and how they are arranged. For instance, if your subject is wearing an armful of bracelets, watches, rings, and carrying a purse/clutch and you want to capture them all in focus in the same photo, you’ll need to pose your subject so that all of the accessories are on the same focal plane. This will ensure that they are all in focus when using large apertures with shallow depth of fields. You’ll have to get creative with the posing, but you can do it. I personally find that an aperture of f/2.8 is best for these types of shots.

When photographing multiple accessories using large apertures, make sure to pose the subject in a way that all of her accessories are in the same focal plane so that they are all in focus.

The last factor you need to consider is the reflectivity of your accessories. Watches, earrings, bracelets, etc. are very shiny and reflect sun very well. Make sure that when you’re taking pictures of your accessories that they are out of the direct sunlight. While the light might look good for your subject’s outfit, the light reflecting off of the shiny metal surfaces of your accessories will create ugly glare and often times {I find this to be especially true with watches} the reflected light will obscure the accessory. If you do find yourself shooting in the sun, find some shade and photograph your accessories there, or, have your subject stand with their back to the sun. This works very well too.

Keeping the accessories out of the direct sunlight ensures that there is no ugly glare produced from the reflection of the sun off of your accessories.

10/27/18 Mr. & Mrs. White

There’s not a day that goes by when I don’t feel so blessed to be Jordan’s wife. He is my everything. These photos and video are the sweetest reminder of our love for one another. So, grab a cup of coffee, pull up a seat, and try not to bawl your eyes out (because I know we did). Every time we look through our photos and watch our video, we cry the happiest tears.

The Proposal

It’s crazy what can happen in a year. I met the love of my life and the rest is history. I was having a hard time ending this post, because frankly, I think I could talk about that evening forever. Then I realized that this post doesn’t have an ending, but instead, a beginning. Thank you so much for all of the love, excitement, and gratitude.

One of my favorite things to do in the fall is bake my dark chocolate chip pumpkin bread! I’ve made it *so* many times for me, J, and friends & family. It’s moist, decadent, and super easy to make! It also makes for a great DIY housewarming gift.
